Katia and Marielle Labèque must be the most anti-conformist duo in the history of music. What other duo pianists could boast of playing Ligeti and Bernstein, Messiaen and Gershwin, as well as Bach, Liszt, Mozart, Stravinsky, Poulenc with such ease… when they are not appearing with Il Giardino Armonico, the English Baroque Soloists or the Berlin Philharmonic? Forgotten or dismissed by their previous record company, Katia and Marielle have thumbed their nose at it, creating their own label, KML (their initials), which has already released remarkable recordings devoted to Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky. Mozart’s dazzling Concerto No. 10, originally conceived for two pianos and orchestra and intended for the duo made up of the composer and his sister, Nannerl, delivers a feeling of euphoria through the harmonious dialogue of the two soloists. Two centuries later, an identical complicity unites Katia and Marielle for a joyful, inventive Mozart.
