)
22h ▪ Entrée libre
Like every summer, jazz will be present at the Radio France & Montpellier Festival, and this year again at the Amphithéâtre d'O, where this music will be heard in the full diversity of its history.
From the tribute paid to Louis Armstrong by Irakli up to the young contemporary guard embodied by the group Wark, all the lands of a vast musical territory will be explored. With these discoveries, such as the singer Virginie Teychené; the rising stars like the pianist Yaron Herman; or the regulars at the major venues, like singer Elisabeth Kontomanou. Once again, the Festival will unfurl all the colours of an emblem of freedom, jazz, grasped live and shared beneath the stars…
Mardi 15
7.30pm - 3 Accords, Bientot 4 -
Programmation Jam - Talents Sud de France
Classe d'orchestre des élèves du Jam dirigée par Pierre Coulon Cerisier.
10pm - Hommage à Louis Armstrong par IRAKLI & les "Louis
Ambassadors" - Programmation France Musique
Irakli is the spirit of Armstrong, like a flame perpetually stirred up
by one of the greatest connoisseurs of this music, from one shore of the
Atlantic to the other. It is also the letter, interpreted faithfully without
servility but with this spirit of freedom that befits jazz. In short, Armstrong’s
music, eternal and alive, in the newfound freshness of first times: a unique
experience.
Mercredi 16
7.30pm - Zingabe Afro Beat -
Programmation Jam - Talents Sud de France
10 pm - Le  quartette de l'harmoniciste Olivier KER OURIO - Programmation France Musique
Manuel Rocheman , piano ▪ Jérôme Regard, contrebasse ▪  Matthieu Chazarenc,
batterie
We had received him last year, as guest soloist of the Marc-Michel Le Bévillon
quartet; Olivier Ker Ourio returns at the head of his own group, with his
songwriter’s talent, his tender verve as an improviser and the remarkable
musical expressiveness of his harmonica. Emotion and excitement are on the
horizon, with the beauty of an instrumental song that breathes like a voice.

The last time we welcomed Philippe Petit to Montpellier, it was as a duo
with Barney Wilen, in the gardens of the DRAC, in July 1986; that concert
became a disc (Flashback, Paris Jazz Corner Productions). After
taking his distances from the stage for a few years, the guitarist is making
his grand return for us, in duo with an exceptional bass player who was
recently awarded the Grand Prix of the Académie Charles Cros.

This young singer made a conspicuous entry on the French scene this season,
by way of a Swiss detour. It is an Italian Swiss label, Altrisuoni, that
allowed us to discover her first opus, an outstanding testimony of vocal
maturity, mastery of the jazz idiom and profound expressiveness. At a time
when we are saturated by insipid mawkishness, her authenticity warms the
heart, soul and mind.

1999, in the group ‘Les Grandes Gueules’. With his imaginary language invented
by Odile Fargère, and the complicity of Hervé Aknin, Elull Noomi (‘the
language of life’, in this new idiom), renews this musical genre, between
the galaxy of progressive forms of music and the planet Magma.
Lundi 21
10 pm - Le trio du pianiste Yaron HERMAN
-
Programmation France Musique
Matt Brewer, contrebasse â–ª Gerald Cleaver, batterie
This young Israeli pianist had won over the audience in the Amphithéâtre
d'O in 2006, playing with the ‘Newtopia Quintet’. Since then, his career
has taken off, on the stages of several continents. He does us the kindness
of returning, this time with his own trio, which associates him with two
eminent figures of the American scene. They will have played in Montreal
and at Antibes Juan-Les-Pins a few days earlier and will offer us the intense
musicality of an exceptional trio.

contrebasse Jacques
Mahieux, batterie
By putting this quartet together nearly 10 years ago, Jacques Mahieux,
who has drummed alongside many of the major figures of this music, wanted
to make heard his choices of musicians, in homage to a few great drummers
(it is too often forgotten that the drummer is a musician first and foremost!).
Surrounded by his son Nicolas on bass and young comrades whose personal
history is also rooted in Northern France and Picardy, Mahieux Senior
proclaims his love (and thorough knowledge) of this music loud and clear.

â–ª piano
Programmation France Musique
Greco-African, born in France, singer Elisabeth
Kontomanou is a citizen of the world. Trained in jazz in Europe, backed up
by a long stay in the United States, she possesses to the highest degree the
sense of the idiom and the intensity of highly personal expression. Her partner,
Laurent Courthaliac, was taught in New York by Barry Harris, the legatee of
the art of bebop. Their duo bears magnificent testimony to the ongoing vitality
of jazz.

10 pm - Le trio du flûtiste Michel
EDELIN - Programmation France Musique
Jean-Jacques Avenel, contrebasse â–ª John Betsch, batterie
Exclusively a flautist (an extremely rare species in jazz, where flautists
tend to be saxophonists adapting to the harsh laws of the marketplace…),
Michel Edelin knows the cross paths perfectly. They have taken him from
staunch classic jazz to the edges of contemporary improvisation, by way
of world music—always with unfailing musicality.
Vendredi 25
7.30pm - Pascale

10 pm - Sophia DOMANCICH Â â–ª Jean-Jacques AVENELâ–ª Simon GOUBERT "D.A.G. trio"
Programmation France Musique
piano â–ª contrebasse â–ª batterie
A trio with a collective name, in which each member fully finds the space
of his own inventiveness. The playing is inevitably collective, too, and
to the highest degree, for this group is woven with old complicities resulting
from experiences lived on the most diverse musical territories. Diversity
of languages, shared risk and action: how can one be surprised that they
go so far and, without severing all links, for they carry us along with
them.
Samedi 26
7.30pm - Patrick
Agullo Anapolis "BRASILTRIO" - Programmation
Jam - Talents Sud de France
Patrick Agullo ▪ chant, guitare électro-acoustique
- Thomas Fontvieille â–ª guitare
Séga Seck ▪ batterie
10 pm - Le quartette du trompettiste Nicolas FOLMER joue
Michel Legrand
Programmation France Musique
Alfio Origlio, piano ▪  Jérôme Regard, contrebasse ▪  Benjamin Henocq, batterie
For more than ten years, the trumpeter has been treading
the paths of excellence. Member of the Orchestre National de Jazz, then
co-founder of the Paris Jazz Big Band, he also works wonders in small groups,
served by admirable mastery of the instrument and improvisation. This new
project, devoted to Michel Legrand, attests to Nicolas Folmer’s admiration
for the man who was the only one in France to give jazz an armful of authentic
standards.
Lundi 28
10 pm - Le groupe "WARK" -
Programmation France Musique
Marc Baron, saxophone alto ▪ Antoine Daures, saxophone ténor ▪ Guillaume
Dommartin, batterie ▪ Sébastien Beliah, contrebasse, compositions
Four young musicians to make today’s music heard, focussing
on the compositions of bassist Sébastien Beliah. Lyrical, intense and
adventurous, their universe speaks of rhythms and sounds, thought and
flesh. With the ‘Jazz migration 2007’ project, they were heard at venues
and festivals throughout France. And a few years ago, Louis Sclavis had
recruited Marc Baron for one of his bands. Wark is the future within earshot…
Mardi 29
10 pm - Le quartette CHARLIER â–ª SOURISSE -
Programmation France Musique
Benoît Sourisse, orgue Hammond ▪ André Charlier, batterie ▪ Stéphane
Guillaume , saxophone â–ª Pierre Perchaud, guitare
Drummer André Charlier and organist Benoît Sourisse long
collaborated with Didier Lockwood, which did not prevent them from conceiving
this two-headed project at the same time, wherein their liking for powerful,
expressive music blossoms fully. They have recruited two good swordsmen
from the same breeding ground: saxophonist Stéphane Guillaume and guitarist
Pierre Perchaud. With them, music is a celebration—of the heart and soul.
Mercredi 30
10 pm - Jean-Philippe MUVIEN "Rebirth" -
Programmation France Musique
 Jean-Philippe Muvien, guitare ▪ Bruno
Ruder, piano ▪ Stéphane Kerecki
, contrebasse â–ª Yoann Serra, batterie
For his first discs, this young guitarist had invited Daniel Humair,
Jean-Paul Celea and Louis Sclavis (if you please!). For the most recent
release, he chose the formula of quartet with piano, a formula that we will
again find on the stage of the Amphithéâtre d'O. Here, its skill and inspiration
work wonders in a universe where the intensity of exchanges and the lively
interaction between partners take music to the highest and most intense
levels!!
Jeudi 31
10 pm - "My love songs" Jean
Marc PADOVANI sextet - Programmation France
Musique
 Claudia Solal, chant
â–ª David Chevallier, guitare
â–ª Didier
Ithursarry, accordéon
â–ª Olivier Sens, contrebasse
â–ª Norbert
Lucarain, batterie
â–ª Jean-Marc
Padovani, saxophones, compositions, arrangements
Born in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon,
on the border between Provence and Languedoc, Jean-Marc Padovani is almost
a native son in Montpellier. Dubbed by success but faithful to the values
of a kind of music that still resists the lifelessness/flabbiness of the
times, this time he has chosen to take over the song, picking a few love
songs and transforming them into moments of jazz, with the expressive intensity
for which he is known.
